    In vitro screening by phototoxic properties of Eugenia uniflora L., Momordica charantia L., Mentha arvensis L. and Turnera ulmifolia L.

    Ethanol extracts of Mentha arvensis L., Momordica charantia L., Turnera ulmifolia L. and Eugenia uniflora L. were screened for light – activated antibacterial activity against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Triplicate assays were conducted with and without exposure to UV-A radiation to test for light-activated or light-enhanced activity. Only the ethanol extract of E. uniflora and M. charantia showed antibacterial activity against an E. coli strain when exposed to UV-A light. The results represent a first report of the light-mediated antimicrobial activity of E. uniflora and M. charantia and suggest that phytochemical investigations may be warranted.Extratos etanólicos de Mentha arvensis L., Momordica Charantia L., Turnera ulmifolia L. e Eugenia uniflora L. foram avaliados quanto a sua atividade antibacteriana ativada pela luz contra linhagens de Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli e Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Experimentos em triplicata foram conduzidos com e sem exposição à radiação UV-A para verificar a presença de atividade antibacteriana ativada ou aumentada pela luz. Apenas os extratos etanólicos de E. uniflora e M. charantia apresentaram atividade contra uma linhagem de E. coli quando exposta à luz UV-A . Os resultados representam o primeiro relato de atividade antimicrobiana mediada pela luz de E. uniflora e M. charantia.Palavras-chave

    Retinopati diabetik adalah komplikasi vaskular yang paling spesifik dari kedua tipe diabetes. Penyebab retinopati diabetik adalah adanya angiogenesis. Angiogenesis diinduksi oleh aktivasi Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). Kandungan Quercetin, salah satu flavonoid yang ada dalam daun Dewandaru (Eugenia uniflora L.) dapat menghambat VEGF. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui akativitas angiogenesis ekstrak Eugenia uniflora L. pada retina tikus yang diinduksi Streptozotocin (STZ). Penelitian ini menggunakan True Experimental Laboratory melalui metode Randomized Posttest Only Controlled Group Design dengan tikus wistar jantan yang dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok, yaitu kelompok kontrol negatif (K-) yang hanya diberikan diet standar tikus, pemberian STZ yaitu dengan dosis 40 mg/kgBB secara injeksi di intraperitoneal diberikan pada kelompok kontrol positif (K+), dan kelompok perlakuan (P1, P2, P3) dan dosis pemberian ekstrak Eugenia uniflora L. yaitu P1=50mg/kgBB, P2=100mg/kgBB, dan P3=200mg/kgBB secara peroral sehari sekali. Selama 1 bulan perlakuan, hasil glukosa darah 1 dan 2, kelompok K (-), K (+), dan P3 menunjukkan  peningkatan kadar glukosa, sedangkan P1 dan P2 menunjukkan penurunan kadar glukosa. Selama penelitian K (-), K (+), P1, P2, P3 menunjukkan peningkatan berat badan. Hasil pewarnaan HE didapatkan penurunan jumlah pembuluh darah pada kelompok perlakuan dengan perbedaan signifikan antara kelompok penelitian (p<0.05). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak Eugenia uniflora L. pada retina tikus Wistar yang diinduksi STZ berpotensi menurunkan respon angiogenesis pada retina tikus yaitu dengan menurunkan jumlah pembuluh darah retina tikus

    Dewandaru (Eugenia uniflora L.) secara tradisional digunakan sebagai penurun panas dan sakit Perut. Penelitian membuktikan aktivitas biologis dewandaru sebagai antibakteri, antidiabetes, dan antioksidan. Senyawa yang diduga bertanggungjawab adalah flavonoid. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui jenis senyawa flavonoid yang terdapat dalam daun dewandaru (Eugenia uniflora L.). Ekstraksi dilakukan dua tahap yaitu tahap penghilangan lemak dengan metode sokletasi menggunakan pelarut kloroform dan tahap kedua maserasi dengan etanol 70%. Ekstrak difraksinasi dengan etil asetat dan air, kemudian fraksinya diperiksa dengan KLT menggunakan fase gerak asam asetat 15% dan BAW. Fraksi etil asetat diisolasi dengan KLT preparatif. Bercak pita yang memiliki harga Rf dan warna yang sama dengan deteksi awal diambil dan disari. Kemudian dianalisis menggunakan spektrofotometer UV-Vis, pereaksi diagnostic NaOH, NaOAc, H3BO3, AlCl3, HCl, KLT dua dimensi, hidrolisis isolat fraksi etil asetat. Berdasarkan pergeseran panjang gelombang spektra UV-Vis dengan dan tanpa pereaksi diagnostik serta uji KLT didapatkan struktur parsial yang diduga kuat 5,7,3',4'-tetra hidroksi flavonol atau kuersetin

    Radikal bebas dapat menyebabkan kondisi yang disebut stres oksidatif, stres oksidatif inilah yang menyebabkan berbagai penyakit degeneratif dan kronis. Senyawa antioksidan diperlukan untuk mencegahnya. Daun Dewandaru (Eugenia uniflora L.) adalah obat tradisional alternatif yang berpotensi memiliki aktivitas antioksidan karena mengandung senyawa flavonoid. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menentukan aktivitas antioksidan dari ekstrak daun dewandaru (Eugenia uniflora L.) menggunakan polaritas pelarut yang berbeda menggunakan metode DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl). Ekstraksi bertingkat dilakukan dengan n-heksana, etil asetat, dan metanol menggunakan metode maserasi. Filtrat diuapkan dan diperoleh ekstrak n-heksana, etil asetat, dan metanol. Aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak dibandingkan dengan aktivitas antioksidan standar (vitamin C). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak n-heksana memiliki aktivitas antioksidan yang lemah, dengan nilai IC50 280,356 ppm, ekstrak etil asetat kategori sedang dengan nilai IC50 129,967 ppm, dan aktivitas antioksidan yang sangat kuat pada ekstrak metanol dengan nilai IC50 sebesar 22,329 ppm.     Smoking has a serious negative impact on health because cigarettes contain harmful chemical compounds. To combat these negative effects, using natural antioxidants such as Dewadaru fruit has become the research focus. Dewandaru contains high antioxidants, namely flavonoids, anthocyanins, saponins, and tannins, which can fight free radicals in the body. The trachea is an air channel between the larynx and bronchi. To identify the activity test of dewandaru fruit (Eugenia uniflora L.) in the trachea of male mice (Mus musculus L.) exposed to cigarette smoke. This study employed true experimental di laboratory with post-test only control group design, probability sampling. The data were analyzed by using Shapiro Wilk and followed by the ANOVA test and Duncan's test. The finding showed that administering a Dewadaru fruit filter could maintain the histopathology of the male mice trachea exposed to cigarette smoke (P&lt;0.05). Dewandaru fruit filter (Eugenia uniflora L.) has activity in the trachea exposed to cigarette smoke among male mice. Using a Dewadaru fruit filter also affects the presence of cilia, goblet cells, epithelial height, and lumen diameter in the trachea of male mice

    &nbsp;Eugenia uniflora L. leaves (“pitangueira”) are popularly used as an alternative to the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The objective of this work was to evaluate the cytotoxicity, antioxidant, cytoprotection and insulinotropic activity of crude leaf extracts of Eugenia uniflora L. on RINm5f cells. The antioxidant activity was analyzed by the Folin-Ciocalteau method; cytotoxicity and cytoprotection using the methods of MTT reduction and HE staining and the insulinotropic effect by radioimmunoassay. The aqueous extract (AQ) presented higher phenolic content than the alcoholic extract (ALC). Both showed low cytotoxicity and ALC presented a significant insulinotropic effect.&nbsp; AQ and ALC showed a cytoprotective effect, increasing cell viability and preventing changes in cell morphology induced by H2O2. The results obtained in this work are indicative of the potential of these extracts as coadjuvants in the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus. &nbsp;Key words: antioxidants, cytotoxicity, cytoprotection, flavonoids, hydrogen peroxide.Folhas de Eugenia uniflora L. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a citotoxidade, a atividade antioxidante, citoprotetora e insulinotrópica dos extratos brutos de folhas de Eugenia uniflora L. sobre as células RINm5f.&nbsp; A atividade antioxidante foi analisada pelo método de Folin-Ciocalteau; a citotoxidade e a citoproteção pelos métodos de redução do MTT e coloração por HE e o efeito insulinotrópico por radioimunoensaio. O extrato aquoso (AQ) apresentou conteúdo fenólico maior que o extrato alcoólico (ALC). Ambos apresentaram baixa citotoxicidade e o ALC apresentou um significativo efeito insulinotrópico. Tanto o AQ quanto o ALC apresentaram efeito citoprotetor, aumentando a viabilidade celular e prevenindo as alterações na morfologia celular induzidas pelo H2O2. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho são indicativos do potencial destes extratos como coadjuvantes na prevenção e no tratamento do diabetes mellitus. &nbsp;Palavras-chave: antioxidantes, citoproteção, citotoxicidade, flavonoides, peróxido de hidrogênio

    [POTENTIAL OF Eugenia uniflora L SECONDARY METABOLITES EXTRACT AS A TOFU PRESERVATIVE]. The purpose of this research is to know the secondary metabolite compounds from the Eugenia uniflora L (Dewandaru) fruit extracts , as well as to measure the potential of water extract from the fruit of E. uniflora L for the use in the tofu preserve as well as measure the impact of the addition of water extract of the fruit of E. uniflora L against moisture, pH, protein on tofu. The process of preserving test against tofu on the research done by soaking time at 2, 3 and 4 hour with each variation of the concentration of extract at  10, 15 and 20% as well as the observation time at 24 and 48 hours for each treatment.The result of the test water extract of the fruit of the phytochemical profile E. uniflora L showed the content of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic , saponins and steroid compounds. Test results from the granting of water extract from the fruit of E.uniflora L in the preserve of tofu with the variation of concentration and soaking time is proven to affect the value of water content, pH, and protein on tofu that was tested.The results of the research done indicate that the granting of a water extract of the fruit of E.uniflora L proven useful to be used as a natural preservative for tofu at 24 hours with a 20% concentration and a soaking time at 2 and 3 hours. From the results, it can be concluded that water extracts from the fruit of E.uniflora L. potential to be used as a natural preservative for tofu

    Diversity of flower visiting bees of Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae) in fragments of Atlantic Forest in South Brazil

    Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae) is pollinated mostly by bees and there are no restrictions for pollen collection in their flowers. This stimulated us to study the bee diversity on its flowers in two forest fragments in southern Brazil, in August and September, 2012. A total of 826 bees belonging to 39 species and four subfamilies were captured with entomological nets. Halictinae presented the greatest richness, followed by Apinae, Colletinae and Andreninae. Apis mellifera was the only common species and the most abundant, followed by Scaptotrigona bipunctata and Melipona obscurior. Seven species were classified as intermediate and 31 as rare. Highest numbers of bees were collected from 10h to 11:30, and The species richness of flower visiting bees was much higher than that of previous studies with first records of Plebeia remota and Anthrenoides paolae. Eugenia uniflora is a food source for exotic and native bees and possibly contributes to the conservation of these bees in forest fragments. In return, the bees probably act in maintaining this plant native of the Atlantic Forest
